It’s one of those songs that make you think of that old cliche´, the one that got away. I was sorta blindsided by this one from Taylor Swift, actually. I still think of her as the breakthrough country artist singing “Tim McGraw” but it’s clear she’s felt some adult-level heartbreak/regret if you listen to the lyrics…
Can you relate to this song? Like I said, it came on the radio as I was driving down 8th Avenue in Nashville and I was drawn in by the repetition of the piano. I also couldn’t help but think, “Dang, Taylor, ya got me with this one!” I’m sorry she’s had to feel these things about a lost love, but it DOES make for some good music 🙂 Here are a few songs that have stabbed me right in my heart over the years, music inspired by the one that got away.
U2 “So Cruel” (I have another post about this one)
Muse “Guiding Light”
Elton John “Can’t Stay Alone Tonight”
Brandi Carlile “The Story”
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals “Stars”
Those are just a few! Do you have certain songs that are a page out of your own diary? If so, which ones? Comment below to share your story. For more break-up music, check out my 2021 list of break-up songs.
