Over the past few years, John Mayer has become one of my more favored artists to listen to. I’m pretty sure it started when I heard “I Guess I Just Feel Like” for the first time and thought that somehow John was writing things straight out of my own mind. Of course, he’s got the talent to do that while most of my thoughts are just a tangled ball of twine, as is my talent on the guitar. But I did get an A in guitar class in college, just throwing that out there, if you’re reading this John! While my appreciation for his talent is deepening, the same can be said of Zach Bryan fans. He’s pretty much taken country music by storm and his fans seem to have unwavering loyalty. So of course these two talented men partnered up for a new song. Here’s the music video featuring their studio session for “Better Days.”
For his new album, I read somewhere that Zach recorded the tracks live with the band (and each featured artist) in a style that’s pretty old-fashioned. Instead of recording each piece separately and layering them together, Zach and everyone was playing and singing all at the same time and I appreciate that! Learning this about the album reminded me of Roy Orbison. And yes, if you read my blogs every day, I’ve referenced Roy a lot in the past few weeks. I was reading a biography so info about the Big O seeped into some of my posts. Now he’s worked his way into this one, too, go figure! He and a few other artists– Tom Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Bob Dylan– formed a super group called Traveling Wilburys. At least part of their tenure together included recording songs as they sat around in a circle playing the music, much like Zach with “The Great American Bar Scene.”
John Mayer lending his talents to “Better Days” is really cool. He has a distinct style on guitar but I’m not musical enough to know how to explain it. It’s a particular sound, or maybe a particular guitar? Either way, I’m a fan and I’m becoming a fan of Zach, too.
