This is turning into rabbit hole, folks. I wrote a while back about two new songs in Christian music that are so matchy matchy that somehow in some way they must be connected behind-the-scenes. The title of both songs is “God Did It,” one by Micah Tyler and the other by TobyMac. It’s not just the title that the songs share. Listen to both here and notice the similar sound of the chorus on both tracks. But the mystery doesn’t end there. Listen to a new song from Anne Wilson and see if you pick up on anything interesting…
Am I just hearing things or does the cadence in that chorus sound a lot like both God Did Its? ‘GOOOOD did-it’ can be heard in the Anne Wilson chorus as ‘GOOOOD sto-ry’. On top of that, the call has a response from a synthesized choir– “God did it… God did it” and “God story… God story.” If they’re not carbon copies of each other, they’re at least fraternal triplets. Or, if the first two songs are avocado and guacamole (a comparison I used in this blog about those songs), then Anne’s song must be… avocado toast? Yummy! But who’s the chef behind these taste creations? Well, obviously God is behind such good and uplifting songs but when it comes to human input, there’s a link between Micah Tyler’s song and Anne Wilson’s. A guy by the name of Jeff Pardo is a co-writer on both songs and his influence can be heard.
It’s like a painter who has a particular style throughout a series of paintings or a clothing designer’s collection having a theme running through multiple wardrobes. That’s the lens I’m using with the two tracks co-written by Jeff Pardo. He’s a great writer with lots of song credits to his name, check him out Instagram and while you’re at it, I guess you should follow the rest, too…
