OpenAI has a series of ChatGPT ads that I can’t decide if I love or hate. They’re simple and show pretty plainly what ChatGPT can do, always using pleasant music and a colorful backdrop for the scrolling text. I guess I love them for their simplicity, proving that effectiveness doesn’t have to be complicated. I sort of compare it to Taylor Swift. Check out the latest ad and then I’ll explain below…
I’ve never (it can’t be proven at least) been to a Taylor show but I’ve heard there’s been pyrotechnics, elaborate stage decor, dancers, etc., which has fed a theory I have. The theory is this: When you play good music, you don’t need fancy window dressing. Of course Taylor is a world-class entertainer and her level of popularity only comes along a few times in any particular generation, but as far as pure singing goes, she’s just above average. That’s fine because she makes up for it with all kinds of other engaging entertaining business tactics. But I’m so much more drawn in by a singer/songwriter who can be on stage with the bare minimum behind them and still command all of my attention. Maybe it’s their voice, maybe it’s the lyrics, but when you’re ultra talented, you don’t need anything else but your voice and your talent. That’s sort of the case with the ChatGPT ads. It’s not so much a “bare minimum” situation as it is a utilitarian display of what the service does. I go back again to the idea that it doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. A case of “what you see is what you get”in commercial form.
The Music. The song used as the soundtrack for this ad is Minnie Riperton “Les Fleurs” from 1970. Fun fact: Minnie Riperton is the mother of actress Maya Rudolph. Here’s the full track from the album “Come to My Garden.”
The Location. The location for this commercial shoot is Stillwater, Minnesota. More specifically, the corner of Laurel Street & 2nd Street by Pioneer Park.
I like this ad for its simplicity, the music, and the women getting out there to run even when it’s hard.
