When it’s silent overhead

The title of this blog might lead you to believe I have some deep revelation to share with you today. If we think of God in Heaven up above, maybe I’m about to dive into a subject like, “When we don’t hear God speaking,” or “Where is God when we need Him most,” or “Is Heaven real?”….

Nope.

I’m talking about when it’s literally quiet in the airspace above my house. You see, it’s rarely, and I mean RARELY, quiet in my neighborhood because we’re right in line with the arriving and departing flights of Nashville International Airport. In the morning, just about every 2 or 3 minutes there’s a plane coming in. In the afternoon, planes are flying out on the same path as those arriving in the morning.

Not on purpose at all, but I’ve become aware of different types of planes coming or going, whether they’re small, medium, large, or even helicopters, jets, or these things:

So when there is virtually no noise coming from above, I know something’s up. It’s only happened a handful of times that I can remember, when I’ve been at home, at least. The first was when President Obama flew over years ago. He was visiting Nashville, I can’t remember why. I had come home for a lunch break to let my dogs into the yard. I looked up and there was the majestic Air Force Once, a behemoth of a plane gliding past to touch down at the airport minutes later.

It happened again recently when President Trump came to Nashville to tour the tornado damage from earlier in that week.

On this particular morning, there were other signs that something was going on. First, the silence… no other planes landing. Then there was a police helicopter circling the area over and over, leading up to AF1 approaching. When I saw this helicopter, I felt sure I’d have a good view of the President’s plane in a short amount of time. I had even heard on the radio that the plane may be approaching the airport from a different side of town, but because of the silence and the lone helicopter, and hearing aircraft faintly from waaaaay above me (some kind of support/security/protection detail, perhaps even a drone of some sort), I still felt sure of the probability I’d get to see AF1.

I’ll be honest by saying I don’t love the noise all these planes make, though. Southwest Airlines has the loudest ones. But there are so many times I look up into the sky and stand amazed at what I see. Other times, I stand amazed at what I don’t see, but I’m sure is there… the God of the Universe! OK, OK, that was as deep as I’ll get!

Church is cancelled??

The coronavirus is now reaching the Heavenly realms! I guess this tiny little planet just wasn’t enough, was it, you little rascal?

I found out the church I attend will not be having services to prevent large gatherings of people. I totally understand.

Can you imagine if this happened during the NFL season? Would they cancel the whole season? Talk about riots in the streets.

The first time I remember a church service being cancelled was in 1992. I was a middle schooler and my family had just moved to Miami, Florida. We got up to go to church Sunday morning, trying to find a regular church to attend and the one we went to had signs on the doors saying there was no church that day. Andrew blew through Miami about 12 hours later.

Now, instead of going to church on Cancellation Sunday, I’ll be listening to part 2 from Loui Giglio’s sermon about temptation. I was in his church for part 1 during my Atlanta road trip.

I guess this post is just a random list of thoughts, after all.

How do you feel about naps?

One of my favorite songs right now is “Welcome to the Wonderful World of” by Sia…

Have a super day…

God DON’T save the Queen

I had the craziest dream the other night. For some reason unbeknownst to me, I was moments away from taking the stage as the singer for the legendary band Queen. Even now as I’m awake, I can remember the uneasy feeling caused by:

  1. Will I remember all the lyrics?
  2. Is my voice good enough? I’m not a singer!
  3. How can I pretend I have charisma?

I also remember there was a guy standing nearby, Marc Martel. I knew he would be a better man to take the stage in the role I was somehow filling. You see, Marc can sound exactly like Freddie Mercury and if you didn’t already know, Marc’s voice was one you heard in the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” So yeah, he’s MUCH better at this than me.

I have no idea what this dream means and most likely won’t be looking into it any further. I just thought it was funny. Also, Marc is awesome! The title of this post doesn’t mean anything beyond this: if I’m the lead singer of Queen, please let the band fade into obscurity quickly 🙂

High hopes amid widespread panic coronavirus cancellations

The frenzy this sickness has caused in the US is mind blowing. I mean, just check your Facebook feed and you’ll see that the majority of friends updates are about the widespread panic*… or toilet paper.

What I’m seeing on TV and hearing on the radio is about all the cancelled events, nationally and local. NCAA, golf, basketball, music festivals, conferences… there’s even Panic at the Disco**!

You know, I was in da club*** here in Nashville the other day to pick up a case of water (for normal reasons). Would you believe that people were buying water by the pallet!? I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and still can’t exactly piece together how the virus relates to a water shortage (or fear of a water shortage). With that said, it’s all coming back to me now***… I remember that Nashville does have a way of overreacting (*ahem* the gas shortage 10 years ago caused by fear of a gas shortage).

If you’re choosing to self-quarantine because of the spreading sickness, don’t worry, be happy****… I have high hopes it’ll all be over within a few months.

Three Joe Biden moments no one’s talking about

In Joe Biden’s speech after winning more delegates on March 10th, there are three moments that should concern people about his cognitive health, his physical health, and the bigger picture. Check them out below…

Microexpressions (4:47)… in this clip, Joe Biden touches his face as he says, “…and it appears, although it’s a little premature, it appears that’s what we were able to do tonight,” referring to his momentum building with possible wins in Michigan, Missouri, and Mississippi, etc. Touching of one’s face could be a “tell” that they are lying or stressed about the information they’re delivering. Also note this is the ONLY time Joe touches his face in the entire 11-minute speech.

No child left behind (6:40)…
in this clip, he says, “Providing every child with access to good edruration.” Please, please, please click the link to watch the clip, it’s so odd, as if his teeth were about to fall out… again. After the gaffe, his wife wants to look over at her husband but also doesn’t want to draw more attention to what just happened, so she tries  to be as casual as possible as she turns her head towards him.

A Trojan horse (10:19)…
this clip shows Biden saying, “We’re on– close to the eve of St. Patrick’s Day.” A reminder that this speech was on on March 10th and St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th. If it were December 18th would you say we’re close to Christmas Eve? I guess we can let this one slide but I also thought it was funny the quote he proceeds to use from poet Seamus Heaney is a line referring to the Trojan War where the Greeks used a wooden horse to trick the Trojans, and thereby winning the Trojan War. Perhaps Biden is the Democrats Trojan horse. If he gets elected, the real powers behind him (*ahem* socialists??) show up to rule. That’s probably a stretch, though. 🙂
