More about Doritos “Flat Matthew” Super Bowl Ad

I have a few thoughts right off the bat with this new ad from Doritos, but first check it out for yourself…

  1. I think it’s awesome how they were able to make Matthew McConaughey look like Flat Stanley. I have no idea how they did that from a production standpoint. Very cool.
  2. Music. Obviously using Queen is usually a ‘win’ and to have a song that fits the theme of the ad is a ‘double win’ for Doritos. The song is “I Want To Break Free,” check it out on YouTube here.
  3. If there was one thing I’d change, don’t have a barking dog in the ad. Every time, and I mean EVERY TIME a dog barks on TV my own dogs go crazy. Makes me dislike whatever product the ad is pushing. Remember that, Doritos, you remember that!

More about the ad…

The Loo. Notice in the bathroom shot they have most, if not all, branded items turned away from the camera. This is for at least 2 reasons, legally they don’t want to show brands they may not have permission to show and secondly, they don’t want to give any other company free advertising.

The Ride. Flatt Matthew is driving a Ford Mustang, model built somwhere between 1964 and 1966. Notice the driver’s side mirror. They were only round during these years. In 1967 they changed to a more square-ish shape.

CYA. Much like turning the labels away from the camera, there is a tiny disclaimer when Flat Matthew slides into the vending machine. Don’t want anyone claiming, “Doritos made me do it!”

Extras. Did you notice there were people in the background while tossing the football? Until I watched it a couple of times, I had no idea.

The Agency. This ad was created by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. It was directed by Academy Award winner Damien Chazelle, and according to the GS&P website, “We also allowed the entire world to experience life in 2D by creating the first-ever TikTok filter that turns people flat.”

Why are Saturdays more lonely?

I try to be a “glass half full” kind of person but I’ve discovered a “half empty” trend in my life that needs to change in 2021. It seems that Sundays through Fridays are mostly good, but on Saturdays I feel lonely. Just thinking out loud (or on the keyboard), I wonder if it has anything to do with the social norms of Friday and Saturday being weekends, and that’s usually when people go out to do things like dinner, events, etc.

To be completely transparent as I (don’t) like do sometimes, this loneliness showed up again last weekend. It was triggered by one thing not going the way I suspected on Friday and my confidence and mood shifted for the rest of the weekend.

Deep down, I know I’m not truly alone because God says in the Bible that He will never leave us, but even with that and my two dogs, I felt isolated and lonely. Part of it is coming from a place of rejection as I try to navigate the dating world. Also it being winter doesn’t really help. I need some sunshine and 80-degree days.

Why is it that Saturdays are typically the day when this happens?

I believe my future is bright, but sometimes it’s just a little too cloudy for my liking.

How long until people wearing masks is not enough?

We’re already recommending people wear 10 masks so who will be the first “expert” to suggest our pets mask up?

Piper, is not a political pup

My guess is it will happen within 6 dog months…so…next week?

Road Rage… Again

Road rage is something most of us have encountered, whether we are the angry ones or someone else. It’s something I’ve thought a lot about since I had a gun pulled on me just about a mile from my house. That was a frightening moment that could’ve changed my life forever, or even ended my life. I say “could’ve changed my life,” as if it hasn’t but the truth is, my life HAS been changed from that encounter. The driver pointing the gun at me didn’t shoot. I’m so grateful for that. Sometimes I wonder if he actually did pull the trigger but the gun malfunctioned. Wouldn’t that be crazy?

Since then I’ve vowed to ratchet down how confrontational I am on the road. Don’t get me wrong, I still have my moments but each time I’m able to act with a level head, I am relieved because it’s impossible to know if the next person I rub the wrong way might act on their own rage. Here in Nashville there’s an ongoing case of a nurse who was killed on her way to work. Allegedly she cut off another driver and that driver shot her. Game over. Just like that her future is gone. No more nurse. No more daughter and sister and friend.

The funny, and alarming, thing is that even though I’ve changed and I’m telling you about it today, just this morning not more than 10 minutes after I mentally recommitted to my best road behavior, the car in front of me didn’t go when the light was green. I politely tapped the horn. Still no movement so I laid on the horn. It was as if the rooster had crowed 3 times because I immediately remembered how I had just decided my road rage days were behind me.

That’s how easy it can bubble back up.

So in your own story, give yourself some grace. I surely have to do the same. But the main point is to let things go. There is nothing happening on the road worth losing a life over. Be safe out there, folks!

In Fraud We Trust

I recently read in the Bible from 1 Peter where it says, “Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the Emperor.” When I read this I felt a bit convicted about the way I have been thinking of Joe Biden, the 46th President of the United States. In America, he is our President (Emperor). So this post, while it comes with a bit of grief, I want to make sure it’s not tearing Biden down. That would go against this verse in the Bible so I really don’t want to do that. However, obviously I’m still posting this today so I wan to make clear that the puns In Fraud We Trust, Hail to the Cheat, or Commander-In-Cheat is more of a jab at the way the entire election process went down, not Biden specifically.

In fact, I wonder how much he even knows of the sinister plans concocted by politicians in this country. I believe the election included voter fraud. Cheating. Anything to get the person they wanted into the White House. I certainly didn’t vote for Biden. In my mind, this particular election will go down as the one Democrats cheated to win. So referencing this sentiment is what the post is about.

Plus, I like puns.

possible slogan for the Dems re-election campaign for 2024?
