Here’s a glimpse into what June looked like this year. Thanks for watching! https://youtu.be/WG6S6UyIHWs
Great and not-so-great games for kids on road trips
Nashville, Tennessee to Tallahassee, Florida. Tallahassee to Memphis,
Tennessee. Memphis to Branson, Missouri. Those are all road trips I’ve
been on recently and while they might not be considered long road
trips, the shortest was still over 5 hours. The longest was about 10
because with children, it just takes longer. Think about stops for
snacks, potty breaks, etc.
The first leg of my trip I was with my dogs and they are great
travelers. That was Nashville to Tallahassee. From there I launched
out with my brother and two of his kids to Memphis, Tennessee. I was
quietly anxious to show these two nieces a couple of spots that I hold
in high regard- Graceland (Elvis Presley’s home) and the Lorraine
Motel (where Martin Luther King, Jr gave his life for the cause of
equality and “freedom of the whole human race”).
But we’ll get to that! Before leaving on the trip I looked up sites
with lists of fun car games to play. I jotted down a list of 9 games.
The game we enjoyed the most starts with this line: I’m going on a
picnic and I’m bringing a _________. There is where you fill in a word
that starts with A. The next person repeats the line, along with the A
word and adds a B word. The next person repeats it all, plus A, plus
B, and adds a C word. On and on it goes till you get to Z and it was
so fun. We all loved coming up with odd or silly words for each
letter. And to keep the game going without anyone getting frustrated,
it’s more than OK to help out when someone gets stuck along the way.
We also played 20 questions which I’d say was the second most popular
game. We each came up with a person, place, or thing, and then
everyone else in the car had to guess it within 20 questions. It was a
little tough for my youngest niece because she’d fire off 37 questions
in a few seconds, so it may be best to go around one by one to ask the
questions, as a way to prolong the game and keep it organized.
Another top 3 game was using a print-out map of the United States.
With the map you can mark off every time you see a state, whether it’s
on a license plate, billboard, road sign, etc. This one is good
because you can do it for a while, set it aside, and when another
state name pops up, pull out the map again and mark it off. So it
could last the entire trip as a game you do, then come back to.
We also added a twist to it where I had the girls close their eyes and
point to anywhere on the map. I’d say something like, “This state is
where you were born.” They open their eyes and read off the state. You
can come up with fun ways to set it up- you met your husband in this
state, you will get a job next year and move to this state, etc. That
was fun!
The game that didn’t work so well was the question game. This is where
any conversation taking place has to be in the form of a question. For
instance…
Person 1: How was your day today?
Person 2: How do you think my day was?
1: Is it safe to say it was an amazing day?
2: Does a bear poop in the woods?
1: What kind of answer is that?
2: Aren’t I free to say what I want in this country???
1: What country are we in, anyway?
And so on. I think it would work best for older kids, or adults. But
even when my brother and I tried it, just he and I with my nieces
listening along, it just didn’t ever really take off.
So I hope you can try out some of these games and help make a long and
potentially hectic trip go by fast and make some great memories along
the way. And if you’re ever in Memphis, make sure to at least drive by
Graceland and check out the Lorraine Motel (if you have time, also add
going into the home of Elvis, and into the National Civil Rights
Museum next to the Lorraine Motel).

Using Spotify with Shazam
The highlight of my day so far is that Shazam and Spotify actually can be linked up together! I posted a blog the other day (Who is Noah Cyrus?) and posed the question why Spotify hasn’t bought out Shazam yet. Well, there’s a button in Shazam that lets you log in to Spotify. A bit of an extra step but hey, saved me a bunch of time this morning looking up each song in Spotify that I’d saved in Shazam. That’s a win for today right? As a bonus, here’s the music video for one of my recent Shazam saves:

PureClean XL steam cleaner review
I recently took advantage of a promotion and received a PureClean XL steam cleaner because it’s a new product and they’re trying to get the word out about it. So I figured why not do a review of my experience!
Starting from the top, the unit was packaged well and comes with quite a few attachments. For a complete list, click here.
It’s super easy to set up, although I still recommend following the directions for your first time, as you’ll need to add in the right amount of water, learn the proper waiting time for the water to heat up enough for steam. But once it’s ready, cleaning is truly a breeze. I tested the cleaner on a vinyl floor and a hardwood floor, and as far as I can tell it worked tremendously.
I used one microfiber pad for the vinyl floor and a second one for the wood floor, so I’d be able to gauge the amount of cleaning that took place on both floors. Afterwards, each pad had dirt on it, so they must’ve done their job!
Be careful once you’re finished because this was over 30 minutes after I turned it off and unplugged it, as I unscrewed the cap to add more water, steam came out. So it stays hot for a while even after you’re done.
As I state in the video below, in the middle of some humor, my only complaint is the lack of instructions on using the cleaner on carpet. The instruction booklet lists the types of floors it can clean, carpet being one of them, but that’s the only time they mention carpet at all. It would be nice to have more details on that. I don’t imaging it will clean carpet as well as one of those cleaners you can rent from Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, etc, but for hard floors, I think it’s a good purchase!

Who is Noah Cyrus?
Shazaaaaam!!! Not to be confused with Kazaam starring Shaq O’Neil, I use the Shazam app on my phone when I hear a song and either don’t know the name, or can’t remember. By the way, when is Spotify going to buy Shazam? Wouldn’t that be nice? The new app would identify the song and then ask if you want to add it to your library. Talk about luxury! This is American, right? Make it happen Daniel Ek!
I’m laughing at a joke that I don’t get.
So this song comes on, kinda sounded like Miley Cyrus, and I kinda liked it. I opened up Shazam and was like, “Please don’t be Miley, please don’t be Miley…” because for some reason I don’t want to like her songs. Then I’m notified in a few seconds that it’s Noah Cyrus singing “Stay Together.” I thought to myself, “Does this dude know he sounds like a girl? Must be Miley’s younger brother or something.”
Oh dang, Noah Cyrus is a girl! Turns out she’s the little sister of Hannah Montana and Achy Breaky Heart’s daughter. I suppose Noah can be a girls name.

Anyway, she and I are both Capricorns so I’m predicting that will be the only thing I like about her. This song has lyrics about drinking, smoking, partying, etc., I can’t relate there. A pastor here in Nashville says when he went in church as a youngster, Southern Baptists would get together not to brag about what they did that week, but about what they didn’t do. #SouthernBaptistlife I do like her dad, though. Say what you want about Billy Ray (or is he just “Cyrus” now?), but I believe he’s got a kind heart based on some interactions I had with him back when I was working at CMT.
I guess Noah’s the next Cyrus up. Her video for “Stay Together” has been on YouTube for a month and already has over 25 million views. Where are all these people and why aren’t they watching my videos?? I’d be fine if even half that number viewed this video of mine.
Noah’s also using the hashtag #nc17 which is clever (because it’s her initials and her age), and also concerning because of what NC-17 means in MPAA movie ratings. Plus in the video she writes 7 the annoying way. You know what I’m talking about.
So the takeaway from this is…
- Noah Cyrus is a girl
- Billy Ray might or might not just be “Cyrus” now
- I spent more than 1 hour on a Thursday afternoon writing about Miley’s sister, and I kinda feel shameful -Out of the Wilderness
