A girl and an apple and the power they had, err, still have

Girls have been changing our minds for thousands of years. Thanks a lot Eve! Although I’m sure it was more difficult for Adam seeing as how Eve was offering an apple to a vegetarian (they didn’t eat any meat in the Garden of Eden yet, right?) and, oh yeah, SHE WAS NAKED! Can I get an amen?

My Dream Wedding

I have no fear of attention. Before the ceremony I’m engaging the crowd, amiable and confident. Friends and family make up the onlookers, most of which are smiling and chatty. There’s an air of excitement. I move to the back wedding-rings-wallpaper1of the room to greet folks loitering outside the sanctuary doors, and I sense her presence. I know it’s not traditional to see the bride in her wedding dress before she walks down the aisle, but she’s approaching and I’m uneasy. It’s hard to explain the uncertainty, but it’s like going to the dealership to pick up your dream car, but come home in the one with the best rebate. It’s good. It has great safety ratings and you kinda… sorta… pretty much… like it. It’s almost exactly like your dream car. Almost. And here I am on my wedding day about to drive a good car off the lot. She’s almost the woman of my dreams. Almost. It’s too late to call off the wedding, a sinking feeling in my stomach. In the back, behind the formally-dressed crowd, she passes by and looks back at me. I don’t really even know her, but I accept this as my fate. How does this all play out? Your guess is as good as mine, because I woke up before we said the I do’s.

Yes, this was literally a dream. One I was relieved to wake up from, and left wondering what it means. I could speculate, just as we all could, on how it may apply to my life. Is about new beginnings or a transition in my life? Is it symbolic of fear, anxiety or bitterness? Maybe I’ll find out when I shut my eyes tonight.

Why I Don’t Like Magic’s Song “Rude”

A new offering to the library of island beats known as reggae music comes from a band with punctuation in it’s name but it’s not Fun., they’re called Magic!. It’s just awkward guys. How are people supposed to do this when periods and exclamation points are already included? It’s weird, OK, Magic!? Understand how this sentence is hard to finish Fun.? Magic with a ! hails from the land of tropical breezes and umbrella drinks… Canada. Great reggae up there, eh, mon?

My love for reggae music is stronger than the gravity of a thousand spinning earths so if you’ve been driving around Nashville the last few days, you may have seen me bobbing my head to the new Magic with a ! song “Rude.” Not ashamed! That is, until I listened to the lyrics. My distaste was punctuated by a furrowed brow and a tilted head Olan Mills would’ve been proud of.

The song celebrates disrespect and I can’t get on board with that.

The story goes like this: a guy comes along to ask for a father’s permission to marry his daughter. The father, for reasons unknown, says no. Now my inclination is that he sees something that raises concerns for his daughter’s future. Maybe this guy doesn’t have a job. Maybe it’s a character flaw or just bad timing. We don’t know. But after the father declines, the jerkwad says he’s going to marry her anyway. Why did the entitled jackwagon ask in the first place? After being blown off, I bet the father said, “You just proved my point, son.”

But maybe in more colorfully-punctuated words.
