Who Is Sophie Powers? The Unusual American Idol Audition, Her Fashion, Her Music.

If you haven’t seen this audition yet, set aside 2 minutes to watch it now (…the uncensored song has been posted here). Sure, it’s not for everybody, but I’m predicting she’ll be back in future episodes this season. I won’t go as far to say this was iconic, but it was just about as unique as you’re going to ever see on Idol. (favorites from episode 2 coming at 1pm central, episode 1 faves here)

Just for a second, forget the idea that Idol is a “family show” so a song with a dozen curse words (the same curse word 12 times, but you get what I’m saying) is probably not going to win over the Karens of the world (see: STFU verse 4), this is one audition that will have Idol fans buzzing. It’s entertainment and you can hear the judges and crew laughing throughout the song. That was a win for Sophie and honestly, my favorite part of the whole show. I really, really wish they would’ve sent her through to Hollywood! I’d like to hear her spin on… well, anything. If you want Sophie’s jacket, she has some merch here.

Let’s Just Kiss and Say Goodbye

How many times have you been part of a breakup that’s dragged on and on and on? I’ve experienced this in my adult dating life. Looking back now, I can confirm there’s nothing fun about these kinds of endings. And yes, even the multiple reunifications that happen between breakups aren’t worth it…

It’s better to pull the band-aid. Go cold turkey. Dry your eyes, just kiss and say goodbye. This is one of the songs I’ve been listening to on repeat since I rediscovered UB40 (and binge-listening like a crazy man). Their cover version was released in 2005 but the original goes way back to the 1970s. Here’s UB40’s great version followed by The Manhattans, who deliver an amazing performance of the song.

This song is a good reminder that usually it’s better to break up once. Kiss. Say goodbye. Move on. Or, as in my case with 6 consecutive rejections since Christmas, just start with the goodbye. 🥴
