CMA Awards: Bro-country vs. Bra-country

I can’t say whether the tides are changing in country music but if you use the recent CMA Awards as any sort of example of what country music is like today, you may notice who wasn’t there.

Remember back in the early to mid-2010s when “bro-country” became a thing? Artists like Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and others all had hit songs that were somewhat generic and formulaic with lyrics about drinking or dancing girls or backroad parties. Obviously there was success in that subject matter, but there was also a lot of pushback from traditional country music fans and well-known country artists.

Fast forward to 2019, the 53rd annual CMA Awards airing on ABC and featured no, not bro-country, but a heavy dosage of bra-country. The women of country music! Get it? Bra… women… women wear bras? It’s just a little diversion from bro-country to remind us all that bra-country is great! The CMA Awards was hosted by the amazing trio of Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and Carrie Underwood and if you didn’t get a chance to see the fantastic opening number, here it is.

I’m sure fans were happy to hear and see a lot of more traditional country being showcased, celebrating legendary women in country music, and not hearing the likes of Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, and Jason Aldean… none of whom were in attendance.

Concerning those CMAs, I was really only surprised by a couple things…

  1. Garth Brooks winning Entertainer of the Year. Grady Smith says it best here…

Actually, that’s it. I was surprise by one thing. Garth. Over Eric Church and Carrie Underwood. Come on! Like Grady is, I’m also a fan of Garth Brooks, but it definitely seemed like he just swooped in and took the award away from others who genuinely deserved it.

I also don’t like Kacey Musgraves, there, I said it. But she’s a big part of the bra-country movement and if the future of country music is how the CMAs looked this year… I’m back in! I love most of the women featured on the show, plus I love Eric Church, Little Big Town, Miranda Lambert (I almost dated her, you know), Dierks Bentley, and plenty of others.

Have a good weekend, y’all!

From Cyndi Lauper to Florida Georgia Line

cyndilauperI’m proud of my taste in music. As a child, thanks to my parents and a record player, I developed a love for the Beach Boys. Later, I developed my first crush and it wasn’t just for her wild style… Cyndi Lauper. In middle school, I began to appreciate adult contemporary music like Bryan Adams and that song “The King of Wishful Thinking” by New Found Glory. And of course there was Vanilla Ice. High school was all about the rap music. Maybe because I lived in Miami or because it was popular everywhere, I don’t know, but I loved Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony, Coolio, Uncle Al, Easy E, Wreckx-n-Effect, 95 South, 69 Boyz, and a few others.

In college, I discovered a liking for U2, Caedmon’s Call, all the while calling DC Talk my favorite band of all time. As a young adult living in Nashville, I gained a passion for the singer/songwriter artists out there like Amos Lee and Brett Dennen.

Country music started as a roller coaster. I’d love it for a while, and hate it for a while. But still, I can like everything from Sammy Kershaw’s “Vidalia” to Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise.”

The artists that are rising to the top of my all time favorites list now are Muse, Jack White, Green Day, Zac Brown Band, and OneRepublic. Thanks for reading!

In Case of Rapture, This Car Will Be Unmanned

I was driving back from my cousin’s wedding. A comfortable ride, the radio playing my favorite songs, the sun rising to my right, the dogs asleep. It’s the time of year where you can leave the A/C off, just open the vents and let the cool air fill the car up. The cruise control was set at 77 and I was doing just that, cruising.
I must love my dogs because I kept thinking about what would happen in case of rapture. My car would still be cruising at 77 and I know my dogs are smart, but there’s no possible way they’d wake up in time to gain control of the car and bring it to a safe and harmless stop! So maybe I’ll come up with a new bumper sticker that says, “In case of rapture, hit this button.” Oh yeah, I’d put the bumper sticker inside so the dogs could see it, and oh yeah, I’d have a button installed that automatically pops out 3 red turtle shells to orbit around the car like on Mario Kart, and oh yeah, I would’ve already taught my dogs to press buttons, you know, with any available paw. No one knows when the rapture will happen, so I guess for now, me and my dogs will just cruise.
