2018’s Song of the Summer

Every summer there’s a handful of songs that become huge hits. But only one can be crowned Song of the Summer. Billboard even charts this exciting time in music going all the way back to 1958. Check out their list here. And if you’re curious like I was, the 1958 hit was “Domenico Modugno” by Volare. Ok, sure.

Anyway, check out a fantastic roll through time with all the hits, in under 4 minutes:

For time’s sake, though, here are the last few years…

2014: “Fancy” – Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX

2015:
“Cheerleader” – OMI (more about the fun video here)

2016:
“Can’t Stop The Feeling!” – Justin Timberlake (although Billboard suggests “One Dance” by Drake feat. some random artists)

2017:
“Despacito” – Luis Fonsi feat. Justin Bieber

It’s interesting that 2 of the last 3 were remakes. Omi has an earlier version of “Cheerleader” before it blew up, and the same with Luis Fonsi and “Despacito.” And what’s really funny is that I like the originals better! Another quirk… 3 out of the 4 above (if you include the Billboard choice for 2016) are songs that feature other artists.

As summer approaches and we’re waiting for a monster hit to kick off the season (remember this one, anyone?), one may wonder if it will follow the same characteristics as any of these recent summer successes. It’s also important to note that last year when Billboard published their list of summer hit contenders (in April), “Despacito” wasn’t on it at all! Even though the song was released in January 2017, it didn’t make worldwide waves until the remix featuring Justin Bieber hit the airwaves a few months later, in April…. after the Billboard list came out.

The same thing could happen this year. There might be a song just waiting to explode, all it needs is the magical combination of timing and catchiness. Glamour has a list, which they tout will undoubtedly include songs you’ll hear all summer long. I, for one, have my doubts. Take a look…

“High Horse” – Kacey Musgraves (nope!)

“The Middle” – Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey (nope! Peaked too early)

“Curious” – Hayley Kiyoko (nope!)

“All the Stars” – Kendrick Lamar and SZA (nope!)

“Lemon” (The New Remix) – N.E.R.D., Rihanna, and Drake (possible!)

“No Excuses” – Megan Trainor (possible but nope! Will be annoying after hearing it 10 times)

“1,2,3,” by Sofia Reyes, Jason Derulo, and De La Ghetto (possible!)

One thing the Song of the Summer seems to capture in recent years: it makes you feel good! I was going to say it also needs to be clean and/or family friendly, but that’s not true is it, Mr. Thicke? Remember his 2013 Song of the Summer?

Clean? Not even close. But endorphins? Oh, yes. That’s mostly why Glamour’s list is almost entirely a bunch of finger wagging nah ah’s. With the exception of “Lemon,” “No Excuses,” and “1,2,3,” none are overly catchy and hardly activate any euphoric sensations.

So this year’s Song of the Summer is “to be determined,” but I’d say watch out for artists like Post Malone, Drake, Justin Timberlake, or someone we’ve never heard of… yet 🙂

The dancers in Keith Urban’s “The Fighter” music video

Keith Urban has two music videos for his latest song “The Fighter.” The song is a duet with Carrie Underwood. The first video features Keith and Carrie with clips of a lone female dancer. The second video, dubbed the Dancers Version, leaves Keith and Carrie out visually but adds in a male dancer along with the female from the first video. You’ve probably already seen it, that’s why you’re here but click here for the video on YouTube. The pair was most recently seen on stage at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas as part of Keith and Carrie’s performance, but who are these dancers, anyway?
Lindsay and LyleTheir names are Lindsay Richardson (left) and Lyle Beniga (right). The pair are an item, as my parents would say. And they were also part of the Tennessee Kids (Justin Timberlake’s band and dancers for the 20/20 Experience tour).

Lyle Beniga
Starting with Lyle, he’s got quite the dance resume. He’s danced with A-list artists who are known for their own dance skills: Justin Timberlake, Usher, Jennifer Lopez. Adding to that list, he was part of a Michael Jackson tribute that aired on MTV. So yeah, dancing in any professional capacity as it relates to Michael Jackson is definitely saying something! A few more fun facts:

  • His hometown is Waldorf, MD.
  • College major was engineering.
  • He has his own clothing line.
  • You can follow him on Instagram here, and Twitter here.

Here’s the Michael Jackson tribute performance, although I can’t tell which one is Lyle.

Lindsay Richardson
Moving on to Miss Lindsay Richardson now:

  • She’s a dancer, a yoga instructor, and an actor. Her dance resume includes Justin Timberlake, Tinashe, Justin Bieber, and Britney Spears, just to name a few.
  • Her hometown is Berlin, Vermont.
  • Her first concert was Hanson. In an mmm bop they’re gone.
  • She has two dogs named Bruce and Charlie.

You can follow her on Instagram here, and Twitter here
Lindsay posted a couple of videos of Keith’s take on using her and Lyle for this video. Take a look by clicking these links.
Part 1 and Part 2

These two dancers are amazing! Keep an eye out for them in all types of forms: live, music videos, and who knows what else! And since you made it down this far, you might as well check out my new children’s book and pick up a copy! 🙂 🙂

Hallelujah…by Leonard Cohen

It’s a song that’s been done by everyone from Bono to Justin Timberlake to your neighbor down the street. But who sings your favorite version of Hallelujah? Leonard Cohen wrote the song in 1984. Let’s see, that would make me around 6 years old. But I’d have to wait almost 20 years to have my first memory of anyone performing the song. It was a small show in the upstairs venue of Bongo Java in Nashville when I heard Kevin Max sing it with just his iconic voice and a piano. How lucky am I that the first time I heard the song was by this great singer?

Since that fateful night in Bongo Java, many great singers have recorded the song, including Justin Timberlake.

Brandi Carlile.

Carlton from Fresh Prince… eh, not so much.

But probably the most well known version, and from what I’ve read the performance that made the song most popular, is Jeff Buckley’s amazing and haunting take on the classic.

Personalities: Justin Texterlake

The cool guy that texts all the time. He’ll text you when he’s with other people, and text other people when he’s with you.

“Justin Texterlake” is a flirt. Let’s just get that right out there in the open. If there’s a way to communicate with a girl, whether it be texting, Facebook chatting, or face to face, he’s got little fear of putting himself out there. For the most part, JT is friendly with everyone and, therefore, has a lot of friends, both guys and girls. He’s a likable character and definitely has qualities shared by “The Party” and possibly “The Indiana Jones of the South.” What sets him apart, though, is the constant flirtation and the oblivious disregard for conversational etiquette. This is glaringly obvious when you’re with Mr. Texterlake. In trying to have a conversation with him, you’ll notice him checking his phone. He’ll ask you a question and during your answer, he’s typing into his device. You want to believe he’s taking notes on your informational answer, but deep down you know he’s trying to score a date for the weekend. Then you ask him a question, and he answers with a question, “What?” You begin to wish of a simpler time, like ten years ago when the only device “Justin Texterlake” had was a Startac phone which he, of course, upgraded to include a long-life battery. Or fifteen years ago when all he had was a beeper and a 143 charm on his necklace.

This label is based on a popular entertainer for good reason because “Justin Texterlake” is popular, even with his faults, ie. lack of attention, ADD, short attention span, whatever you want to call it. The strengths of a Texterlake is his ability to network. Whether it’s for a weekend grill-out, or a Habitat For Humanity house build, he can be the go to guy for rallying a large group.

Now these characteristics I’ve attributed to a guy, but I’m curious if there’s a girl version of “Justin Texterlake.” In my circle of friends as they are now, I don’t know that there is one. What are her characteristics? Does she text a lot? How does she flirt? What sets her apart from other girls? All these questions will remain unanswered on this posting, because, quite frankly, I don’t know the answers.

I’d like to write more, but I just got a text from a Texterlake, so I need to go.
