2018’s Song of the Summer

Every summer there’s a handful of songs that become huge hits. But only one can be crowned Song of the Summer. Billboard even charts this exciting time in music going all the way back to 1958. Check out their list here. And if you’re curious like I was, the 1958 hit was “Domenico Modugno” by Volare. Ok, sure.

Anyway, check out a fantastic roll through time with all the hits, in under 4 minutes:

For time’s sake, though, here are the last few years…

2014: “Fancy” – Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX

2015:
“Cheerleader” – OMI (more about the fun video here)

2016:
“Can’t Stop The Feeling!” – Justin Timberlake (although Billboard suggests “One Dance” by Drake feat. some random artists)

2017:
“Despacito” – Luis Fonsi feat. Justin Bieber

It’s interesting that 2 of the last 3 were remakes. Omi has an earlier version of “Cheerleader” before it blew up, and the same with Luis Fonsi and “Despacito.” And what’s really funny is that I like the originals better! Another quirk… 3 out of the 4 above (if you include the Billboard choice for 2016) are songs that feature other artists.

As summer approaches and we’re waiting for a monster hit to kick off the season (remember this one, anyone?), one may wonder if it will follow the same characteristics as any of these recent summer successes. It’s also important to note that last year when Billboard published their list of summer hit contenders (in April), “Despacito” wasn’t on it at all! Even though the song was released in January 2017, it didn’t make worldwide waves until the remix featuring Justin Bieber hit the airwaves a few months later, in April…. after the Billboard list came out.

The same thing could happen this year. There might be a song just waiting to explode, all it needs is the magical combination of timing and catchiness. Glamour has a list, which they tout will undoubtedly include songs you’ll hear all summer long. I, for one, have my doubts. Take a look…

“High Horse” – Kacey Musgraves (nope!)

“The Middle” – Zedd, Maren Morris, and Grey (nope! Peaked too early)

“Curious” – Hayley Kiyoko (nope!)

“All the Stars” – Kendrick Lamar and SZA (nope!)

“Lemon” (The New Remix) – N.E.R.D., Rihanna, and Drake (possible!)

“No Excuses” – Megan Trainor (possible but nope! Will be annoying after hearing it 10 times)

“1,2,3,” by Sofia Reyes, Jason Derulo, and De La Ghetto (possible!)

One thing the Song of the Summer seems to capture in recent years: it makes you feel good! I was going to say it also needs to be clean and/or family friendly, but that’s not true is it, Mr. Thicke? Remember his 2013 Song of the Summer?

Clean? Not even close. But endorphins? Oh, yes. That’s mostly why Glamour’s list is almost entirely a bunch of finger wagging nah ah’s. With the exception of “Lemon,” “No Excuses,” and “1,2,3,” none are overly catchy and hardly activate any euphoric sensations.

So this year’s Song of the Summer is “to be determined,” but I’d say watch out for artists like Post Malone, Drake, Justin Timberlake, or someone we’ve never heard of… yet 🙂

The woman in Brett Young’s “In Case You Didn’t Know”

1

Brett Young seems to be making waves in country music this year. He’s got a couple of music videos out and the one for “In Case You Didn’t Know” is simple, and yet matches the mood and feel of the song really well. Sometimes less is more, right? Anywho, Brett is singing to a girl who doesn’t exist, although when they shot the video, there clearly was a girl on set. She played the part of the “imaginary girlfriend” but who is she in real life?

*Who’s the woman in Brett Young’s “Mercy” video? Find out here*

Well, with the help of (and big thanks to) folks finding this post and commenting, the girl has been identified. Her name is Sara Morgan. Somewhat confirmed in a tweet I sent to @SaraMorgan97

The 3 dancers in Omi’s “Cheerleader” video

A while back I posted info on the lead dancer/actress in Omi’s “Cheerleader” video. She’s Sheila Marie, and she can move! But there are a couple of dancers who join her on the Florida beach. I won’t even call them “the other dancers” because they’re so good!

“All these other girls are tempting…”

Yeah, these 2 dancers are cute, and they sure can dance! But who are they? Scroll down to find out! dancers1The one in the yellow skirt is Ja’Naye Thurston. As I looked into it more, I got a lesson on how talented she is: she’s a dancer for the Miami Heat basketball team, coaches dance, models, and appears in music videos and television programs. Oh, and I thought this was pretty cool: it wasn’t too long ago that she was a cashier at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Restaurant, and a sales associate at Macy’s (both according to her LinkedIn page). Not to mention she has a LinkedIn page! She makes having a LinkedIn page look cool. In fact, it’s endearing because it’s such a regular person thing to do. It just goes to show that hard work, a boatload of talent, and I guess being on LinkedIn, might just get you where you want to be!

The dancer with the bikini top is Yaritza Medina (pictured below on the right).
dancer3aShe’s appeared in quite a few music videos, programs on Univision and Telemundo, a couple of reality TV shows, and evidently knows Spanish really well; most of what I found about her was in Spanish, whether it was her Facebook fan page, or her Twitter and Instagram feed. So just like Ja’Naye, she’s got a lot going on, too, including acting, modeling, and choreographing.
dancers4There you have it! These three girls are working hard and I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of them in music videos, on TV, and perhaps even movies if they choose to pursue that.

The woman in Omi’s “Cheerleader” music video…and other fun facts about the video

UPDATE: What will 2018’s Song of the Summer be? Check out my thoughts, here 🙂

Omi undoubtedly has the hit of summer 2015, right? But who’s this woman below?
Scroll down to find out! sheila video

She’s cute, she can dance, and this is not the first music video she’s appeared in. But who is she? You’re about to find out!

sheila tattoo3

from her IMDB page

Her name is Sheila Leason but she goes by Sheila Marie (Marie is her middle name).

She’s also in the Nicki Minaj video “Only” as pictured here:Sheila NM3 Sheila NM4 Sheila NM5 Sheila NM6 Sheila NM7

She also played a part in the Elvis Crespo featuring Pitbull video “Sopa De Caracol.” If you want to see that, click here.

Since “Cheerleader” came out, she’s been in the Ray J featuring Lil Wayne video for “Brown Sugar.” Check it out here, she’s mostly in the last half of the video.

She’s been featured in Kay Jewelers stores, the link to those pics is here.

You should follow her on Twitter! Her handle is @Ms_SheilaMarie_

Her cousin is Associate Pastor Johnny Olivardia from Impact Church in Miami, Florida.

Some other fun facts about the song and the 2015 music video:

1. It was shot at Haulover Beach in Miami, Florida. Part of the beach is “clothing optional”…yes, that means there are naked people walking around so don’t look for Google images of the beach, or at least don’t say I didn’t warn you.

2. The dancers learned the choreography in just a few hours, according to this video.

3. The song was originally released in 2012 and was a hit in Jamaica and Hawaii. There’s a music video for that version (sans Sheila Marie), here:

4. “Cheerleader” started gaining traction in the U.S. when Simon Cowell (famous producer and former judge on American Idol) did a deadpan performance of the song, which you can see here.

5. The version we are hearing on the radio is the remix done by German DJ/producer Felix Jaehn, and if you haven’t seen the video yet, you might as well take a few minutes and check it out.

6. The car looks to be a classic 1975 Chevy Caprice, as seen below. I learned from Johnny Diaz who reports for the Sun Sentinel that these restored and tailored cars are called donks. Thanks for the info Mr. Diaz! Read his article here.

8. You might be asking, “But who are the other two dancers in the video? Come on!” Well, I’ve got the answer, check it out on this more recent post.

9. It’s being called the song of the summer by lots of critics. Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon continues to say that, too, but also called this song a possible song of the summer. History will tell! Here’s a clip from the Tonight show of Jimmy doing a pretty hilarious rendition of the song as Donald Trump:
