I was listening to the Elvis channel on SiriusXM the other day and the DJ had just played a song with a woman’s name (“Sylvia,” I believe) and threw in an Elvis trivia fact I wasn’t aware of… Elvis has 17 songs with a woman’s name in the title. I hadn’t thought to count them before but don’t you go counting them now… I’ve put together the list! Of course, if I’ve missed any or I’m a little off on one or two, comment below…

Midsommar… not exactly a movie review

Recently I watched Midsommar on Amazon Prime. I read comments following the YouTube trailer so I knew going into it that it would be weird, possibly disturbing, and it’s a horror movie. I even prayed to God that if this movie was going to harm me that I’d be compelled to turn it off!

I watched it over the course of two days, because that’s just what I do, starting it late one night and finishing it the next night. Sometimes I start a movie way too late and can’t stay awake. What can I say, I’m 41 yrs old!

So my expectations were high regarding it’s wow factor, it’s horror factor. I have to admit, there were some strange things going on, but it wasn’t quite as emotionally disruptive as I was expecting. It’s not so much that it’s a wild and crazy movie, but the story is pretty wild. What I enjoyed is that it didn’t get into a situation where everything was happening in someone’s mind, know what I mean? Like those movies or shows that end with the main character waking up and oh wow, it was all a dream! I hate those endings. So this was very much something that could really happen in real life, and I appreciated that.

There are a handful of scenes that are for adults only, not that kids would even want to watch this one haha. I’ll be reading an explanation of the movie after I post this but if you’re into movies that aren’t cookie-cutter, that don’t follow a formula, and if you like horror but not in the “everything happens at night” kind of way, you should give this movie a try! But like I said, there are a few scenes that are easily considered disturbing, so if you’re curious about those, do some research first to make sure you’re up for it.

Blood type is evidence of intelligent design

I started doing research on blood types as I became more curious about the characteristics of a fetus in the mother’s belly. If you’d like to read my post about that topic, click here. It actually came from a thought I had as I woke up one morning…

Abortion is an attempt by the mother to remove herself from the situation. But all she accomplishes is removing someone else from the situation.

As I thought more about the classification of blood (Type A, B, O, etc), it struck me that this, too, is evidence of a grand design. 

As I understand it, wouldn’t evolution (as an opposition to “creationism”) be the most simplest form of ‘progress becoming the standard’, or norm? For instance, as beings evolve, it would make sense to me that all creatures of the human kind would have the same exact code when it comes to blood. Similar to cars… whether you have a Volvo or a Chevrolet, they all use the same fuel. Now, I know there are exceptions because of diesel and electric, but you understand my point, right? The easiest thing to do for the survival of car-kind is for all the vehicles to use the same fuel. A universal lifeline. 

This is how evolution would go, isn’t it? How would something as complicated and intricate as the tiny blood cells ever continue in an evolutionary way, and why? Why do these differences continue to exist? 

These tiny differences that mean a whole lot are part of God’s signature. We are all created equal, but there is so much attention to detail in these crazy, amazing human bodies we live in. In evolution, there wouldn’t be any attention to detail. It would just be about survival of the species. 

I mean, the fact that a person with type A blood cannot receive a blood transfusion from a person with type B blood is fascinating. Similarly, blood transfusions between species certainly leads to death. I haven’t explored why there are these blood type differences, but just the fact that they exist is a beautiful gesture of divine work.

My biggest fear is unrealized potential

I was watching some sort of race featuring runners circling a track for 4 laps…. the distance of a mile. To complete this in a competitive way, these men had to train and train and train and train. But also, they’re ability to excel in this arena is something they were born with, too.

As I watched, I thought about my experience running track in school. It’s very similar to my experience playing school football. It all adds up to absolutely nothing! I never ran track, nor did I play football. Not one 4×400, not one touchdown. These are a few things I wished were different, along with at least thinking about a couple years in the military. What I remember, though, about these 2 areas of my life (sports and military) is that I never even thought once about playing football. I never even thought once about joining the military. So to have regret doesn’t really make sense because not doing them wasn’t really a choice… it’s just something I never even considered.

All that to say this: I wonder if I could’ve done well as a track athlete. My sister ran track in college. My brother was on the track team in high school. I love running and I think I’m fast and have endurance, so I bet I would’ve been a decent runner. But I never did it.

So while I was watching these guys run, I thought further, “I hope at the end of my life I don’t look back and think about all this potential I had but never took advantage of it.” It’s easy to look back and think, “coulda woulda shoulda”…  but not as easy to look into the future or observe the present and think about how I can maximize my potential. Where are areas I can thrive? What strengths do I have that can help me shine and be the best in a particular area?

I don’t have the answers at the moment but I’m glad I saw those runners that day. It was a good reminder to do my best, stretch my abilities, and think about the opportunities that are obvious and the ones that are just below the surface.
