Single-car accident in front of my house entertained me for almost an hour. Am I a bad person?

 

I was eating lunch at the dining room table and heard a loud pop. If you’ve been keeping up with my blog, you might think this pop was a gun shot like this story from a few weeks ago, but it wasn’t.

As you can see, there was commotion on the street in front of my house. Apparently the driver of the gray car struck the “speed hump ahead” sign and spun around and came to a rest across the street in my neighbor’s yard.

My first reaction was to go out to help. My follow-up thought was… “…but how?” I envisioned going out there, chatting with the guy, then realizing I literally can’t do anything and walking away embarrassed. Because of an embankment and muddy grass, someone would have to tow him out of the yard. He needs a truck. I don’t have one. He needs a tow rope. I don’t have one.

So instead of being a Good Samaritan, my guilty pleasure yesterday was just observing everything that went on. Lord, forgive me! I counted a total of 5 civilians and 1 police officer that came onto the scene to help. Two or three were friends or family of the driver, and one was my neighbor who happened to have a truck and a tow rope. My neighbor, the Good Samaritan.

I concluded that sometimes it’s OK to let someone else be the hero.

I sold my drone, here’s why…

A couple of years ago, I was really excited to fly my drone for the very first time.


Since then I took her up on a lot of flights around Nashville and north Florida, and even a time or two in the Bahamas.


When it was fun, it was really fun. But as time went by, I found myself flying it less and less because of a few reasons:

  1. I live near an airport so flight at my house is restricted.
  2. There are barely any areas in and around Nashville that are officially approved for drone flying.
  3. More restrictions seem to be going into effect weekly (registration, legal times to fly, locations to fly, prohibitions, rules, etc).
  4. I won’t let the man tell me what to do!
  5. It felt like one of those situations where it’s good to quit while I’m ahead.

By “quit while I’m ahead,” I mean the drone was in good shape, no major crashes, and I still had the drone… meaning I didn’t lose it in the ocean, a lake or river, or had it just fly off never to be seen again. So the other day I let her fly off with someone else.

It seemed like the right time and so far I don’t regret it. I bought a nice Pelican-style case from Sam’s Club and customized the interior to fit the drone and it’s accessories, so at this time I miss the case more than the drone 🙂

Last year, I was hanging out with some friends who’d recently been laid off and since. We were in an environment where putting together a Spotify playlist was appropriate, so created a “recently laid off playlist” and played it loud. This is not the first list I’ve made about the dreaded pink slip, but this one is a bit different. It’s kind of like that last ‘hoo-rah’… the last time around the track… a final farewell. “your truth” is a cop out

If I hear one more person talk about “your truth” or “their truth” or whatever, I’m going to scream! There’s no such thing as your truth, my truth, his truth, her truth, their truth, our truth. Nope. Sorry. If you pick up a green crayon and “your truth” says it’s yellow, I’m sorry but “your truth” is false. It’s not yellow, it’s green. I know it makes us feel better to have a society that pats us on the back and says, “It’s OK, you’re right.” even when we’re wrong, and that’s what this whole “your truth” movement is if you think about it. No one is willing to tell someone they’re wrong.

But what’s right is this… the only truth that exists is THE truth. Going back to the simple crayon example, the crayon is either green or yellow. Blue, red, black, orange… sure there is a crayon for every color. But the green crayon is green no matter what “your truth” is.

It’s also funny that a lot of people who are so passionate about everyone sharing “their truth” are not very tolerant of people who disagree with them. I’m not sure what’s going on in America but if Alecia Keys’ behavior hosting the Grammy Awards last week is a microcosm of what our country is like now… well, I guess I’m hoping her example is just the Hollywood/elite/out of touch world view, not the majority of Americans.

Because I basically share nothing in common with anything she talked about during the Awards ceremony. In fact, I became so turned off by it all, that I literally turned it off. I wanted to celebrate music and musicians but the show was drenched in political agenda.  I guess that’s “their truth” and I should just go along, though, right?
