Roller Derby Names for Women

I’ve been skating around the neighborhood with my niece and doing so has reminded me of roller derby. I really enjoyed going to watch the bouts in Nashville and it was fun to find out Tallahassee has a derby team, once the season starts. I’ll have to try going to watch them sometime! I mused many years ago that if I had a roller derby name, because they’re usually some kind of pun or twist on words, mine would be Tom Bruise. Every time I say it, I look around to see if anyone else thinks I’m as cool as I think I am.

I thought it would be fun to come up with a list of derby names for women, so here’s that list. My favorites are the last 3 at the bottom. Which are your favorites? These might already be in use by a derby player somewhere, I have no idea.

The Accenture Robo-Dog Commercial – The Music and More!

We can all use more dogs in our lives, right? Even if they’re robots, give us all the dogs! In 2022, there was this KIA commercial with an adorable e-pup (if we can call it that?). Now Accenture has an electronic canine for us to adore…

The Music. The soundtrack for this is a song called “Dreaming” by Blondie. Here’s the full track…

As much as this commercial is a fantasy, there is a real robot dog created by some part of Accenture. Here’s a video from Accenture Baltics…

Is it weird that even with this lifeless mechanical dog, I want to pet it and cuddle it and feed it and take it on walks and buy it a cute little charging station!? I have issues.

How do you feel about the robo-dog commercial from Accenture? Cute, right? Chime in below and I’ll see ya tomorrow.

The Apple TV Commercial – Timothée Chalamet, the Music, and More

“Yeah, who doesn’t at this point?” I love that line from Timothée Chalamet in the new Apple TV commercial. Check it out then scroll down for more info about the ad, including the song which came out over 30 years before Timothée was born!

The Music. The soundtrack of this minute-and-a-half long commercial is a French song called “Que C’est Triste Vinise” by Charles Aznavour. Here’s the full track…

Now, before you go off assuming I’m hip and cool (I get that alllll the time, sheesh), I didn’t and basically STILL don’t know exactly who Timothée Chalamet is. This wouldn’t bother me so much except that when the commercial came on during NFL football and my 16-yr old niece was nearby, she said, “Is that Timothée Chalamet?” Immediately I’m thinking to myself that I, in fact, am not cool and hip. I have no idea who Timothée Chalamet is. But Ben, don’t you remember the kid in the green stripes in the McCormick commercial?

No. No, I don’t. But anywho, I guess he’s the next Hollywood heart throb with 20-something’s (and teen girls, evidently?).

With that said, I enjoyed the Apple TV+ commercial. Funny, obscure music that was actually not obscure in the 60s, I call that a win. So Apple, you might as well… call him. 😉

That time my dog jumped out of the camper window!

Head, body, toes, her whole self went through the dinette slide-out window! From storms to fireworks, she gets scared rather quickly and this particular event was a day or two after New Year’s. Above my head, the dinette window is a couple of feet up, so for her to jump was quite a feat. It fell from the window, the screen that is, as she pawed her way through it. But would you believe after getting the screen out of the way (and the window was open since there was a nice breeze), she must’ve looked out and thought, “I can’t really see the ground because of how dark it is, but I can do this!”? Did she kiss Piper goodbye on her way up to the dinette seats and out the 8-foot high window? Piper blinks and just thinks, “What a weird dog.” With my arms, I would’ve caught her had I known this was happening but I was in the house next door watching football (RIP Ohio State who lost to Georgia that night). Who knew my dog was planning such an escape!? “Anywhere but in this tiny camper,” she must’ve thought. What would you have done, if you were her? Deep breath, hold on tight, and make the leap! She ran to the front door, then the back, and I eventually saw her in the yard. I thought, “Wait, didn’t I leave Asia INSIDE the camper, how is she now OUTSIDE the camper!?” I simply can’t wait to hear this story, although Asia has yet to tell me all the details. That’s how I kicked off the first hour of 2023… finding a wide open window, screen toppled on the ground, and a dog who would do anything to be somewhere else when loud booms are booming.

See y’all tomorrow…

Burger King Needs to Go Back to the Throwbacks – A Commercial Review

These Burger King commercials have got to go! “Beeee Kaaaayyyy have it your way…. YOU RULE!” This is the biggest lie of the year because if I ruled, like they claim, these commercials would be rotting at the bottom of the ocean along with this Sprite commercial! Even if they brought on a chuckle the first 10 times I saw them, the ads have been so overplayed. It’s sickening. But did you know they’re a throwback to commercials from the 1970s? Scroll down for more about that!

Besides the singer’s voice grating on my nerves, the worst part of this whole campaign is that I find myself singing the jingle throughout the day. Their marketing team probably calls that a win, actually. But it just makes me detest the commercials even more! The “whopper whopper whopper” version of the campaign might be the worst of them all, so I’m sorry for including it below.

Go Back to the Throwbacks. If they’re going to revive a jingle from the 70s, at least have good singers, right? Check out these ads from the mid-70s. Notice how much better these women sound. I could watch these over and over, instead of the watered down B-version in 2023.

I’ll also admit that Burger King has one of my favorite commercials featuring a family of burgers. The kid wishing he had never been broiled is a classic line…

I wish the new “throwback” commercials had never been broiled but as the cliché goes, it is what it is. Do you love the new ads, or do you want to toss them out with last week’s leftovers? Chime in below and I’ll see you tomorrow!
