Year in Review: What Came Out of the Wilderness in 2021

As 2021 dwindles to an end, I’d like to reflect how it went writing a post every single day of the year. To sum it up in a few words: I loved it. Was it always easy? No, especially this month (December) as I came down with Covid! The worst symptom was a sore throat that lasted for days but it also sapped my energy and motivation to write. That’s why, for the first time ever, I welcomed a guest post and it came from the best man I know…my dad. Here’s that post from Christmas day.

But in the previous 11 months I posted about so many parts of my life: dating, leaving Tennessee, stories about my dogs, original satire, and TV commercials. It was these TV ad posts that I seemed to enjoy the most, mostly because I already had a personal reaction to the commercial and thought readers might, too.

Among these, three popular posts are as follows:

Allstate’s “Duet” Commercial

Famous Voices in TV Commercials

Kohl’s Ad Featuring Not Dolly Parton

I also posted every so often about photographs I had taken from various hikes or trips. You can find more of my photography (and find a few to purchase) by checking out my page on the FineArtAmerica website, but for those posts I mentioned, here are a some favorites:

Fawns at Dawn – Radnor Lake, Tennessee

Pensacola – A Beach Tour

Kentucky Sunrise – Complete with Fog

And of course, the dating. I’ve said before and I’ll say it again: if you’re in a relationship and don’t have to deal with the dating scene, be grateful! My most recent date did this to me, but actually I had a handful of fun dates before I moved out of Nashville. I don’t actually write about the good ones often, so here are a couple “almost” dates.

I Almost Dated A Woman with 3 Cats

Donald Trump Cost Me A Date

Posting every day has been a real source of joy in 2021 and I don’t plan on changing a thing in 2022… Except maybe writing more about the good dates? Anyway, a big thanks to each one of you who have stumbled on my blog for one reason or another. I appreciate you very much and hope to at least provide a laugh or a bit of entertainment for you in the next 365 days.

So until we meet again tomorrow, have a fabulous final few hours of 2021!

Alabama Cincinnati Bowl Bingo

My family is excited to watch the playoffs game this afternoon. Just like everyone who’s not already an Alabama fan, we’re anti-Alabama big time tonight! It just so happens that Cincinnati is the team opposing them, so we’re rooting for Cincinnati. Hopefully the game will be fun to watch, but to sweeten it up a bit we created a bingo board we’ll play throughout the football game. The board is attached below, but first here’s the list filling out the 24 squares. Feel free to copy these (we found most of them on other sites, as well), and have some bingo fun of your own!

Minari – A Movie Review Without Spoilers

Against what my body was telling me (which was, “go to sleep!”), I stayed up to watch Minari because my brother-in-law and niece were excited to watch it. Granted, it was only around 915pm but what can I say, I was being an tired old grinch. Also, though, I was still feeling the affects of Covid so sleep seemed like good medicine.

I said, “I’ll give it 10 minutes,” and if I was still interested I’d watch. I wasn’t pumped the movie was 116 minutes and I figured after 10 minutes I’d shuffle off to bed.

Well, dang it, we connected an actor (Steven Yeun, who I liked in “The Walking Dead”) to “The Walking Dead” and I felt myself get a little more invested in the movie.

Also right off the bat, the young actor who plays the son, David, was the most adorable kid. Just wait till you see him in his little cowboy boots.

Then the grandma shows up and I’ll just say this, between her and the young boy, you’ll be laughing and rooting them on for the rest of the movie. In other words, I stayed up for all 116 minutes, and that includes about 15 minutes of an internet outage delay. 😬

I recently read a YouTube comment about the film saying it’s a feel-good movie. I wouldn’t call it that; there is more heartache than there are heartstrings being pulled. But I’ll say this in regards to what I enjoyed, even with all the setbacks the family faced – I love the humor, the raw emotion (in some of the arguments), the natural dialogue (flowing in and out of Korean and English), and the way the actors seemed to be working off of a loose script. It all just seemed so genuine, as if it was a documentary of a real family vs. actors reciting memorized dialogue. You know when it just seems like there aren’t things you can script? I’m thinking of when the son is trying to peal the banana. It’s a great but quick scene.

So the most important question, is it worth watching? For the wonderful acting, yes. But if you’re looking for a movie that will cheer you up or one you don’t necessarily need to pay detailed attention to, this is not the one.

If you watch it, or have already seen it, leave a comment below with your thoughts!

Unexpected photos from Christmas

I thought I would post some photos from the past few days of spending Christmas with family in north Florida. We had presents, turkey, pie, singing, hugging, but none of that is pictured below. Take a look at these photos including a Christmas service at a local Tallahassee church, glowing balls, a camel, trees full of buzzards, and more!

She/He/They Tested Positive

The title automatically makes you think this will be a story about a hip, woke, person who cares way too much about which pronouns people use but I will give you some immediate relief…it’s not! It’s actually about 3 people- 2 she’s and a he– who tested positive for Covid in a matter of a week or so.

Covid has been the story of this Christmas for my immediate family. Among the 10 of us who were able to gather for the holiday, one of my nieces tested positive, then me, then my sister.

My symptoms were unlike any sickness I had before so even before testing, I was 99% sure it was Covid. When I get a cold, for instance, it’s very predictable. Starts with a scratchy throat. Progresses to a runny nose and sneezing. Then it’s over.

This one, though, was nothing like that. The first night of symptoms included cold sweats, a headache, and an achy body. Cold sweats made me think I had a fever….but my temperature has been 97/98 the entire time.

Then on day 2 my throat started to hurt and it got really bad by day 4. It felt like swallowing glass for a couple of days, actually.

I’m on day 8 now and thankfully my throat is back to normal but I’m still feeling a lingering achiness and lethargy.

My sister is on all the meds and vitamins I had been taking so hopefully her worst days are in the past also. The peculiar thing about her catching it is that she’s been vaccinated! So much for that, I guess.

For Christmas gift exchanging, we all sat outside, spread out, and opened presents. One of the benefits of December in Florida, I guess.

2021 isn’t wrapping up the way I would’ve planned it for me or for the time spent with my family, some of whom I didn’t get to see because of getting Covid. But we are rolling with the changes (as the REO Speedwagon song goes) and hopefully with this story not going how we would’ve liked, were about to turn some pages.
