Lady and Gentlemen, Start Your Engines! (Daytona 500 Part 1)

Fast cars.
Loud engines.
Jean shorts.

Lady and gentlemen, start… your… engines! Last week, my sister and I went to our first NASCAR race, the Daytona 500. There was fun, there were games, but it wasn’t all fun and games. I’ll get to some of that later, but the story starts back in November on my sister’s birthday.

Then next few months flew by and before I knew it, the Great American Race was only a couple of days away. The plan was to drive from Nashville, where I live, to meet my sister and parents in Tallahassee, where they live. The morning of the race my parents would drop us off then pop over to Orlando to see my brother and his family till the race was over. And it all went according to plan until, oh I don’t know, about an hour outside of Nashville. I was so sleepy I had to pull over at a rest stop. I swear I set my watch for a 15 minute countdown thinking that would be enough of a power nap to get me back in the game. Only thing is, I accidentally set my watch for a 15 hour countdown. So I woke up and, after discovering the disaster, was  soon passing through…

Alabama the Beautiful.
Alabama the Beautiful.

If you’ve ever driven I-65 through Alabama, you know there are a few landmarks you can’t miss. The most obvious is the huge rocket at the Alabama welcome center. And of course, if you need any sort of shoe wear or clothing, it’s hard to pass up a pit stop at Sikes and Kohn’s Country Mall.
sikes3sikes2And then there’s this…
Go_to_churchIt’s actually a pretty nice drive down 65 then east on 231 over to Interstate 10. Along the way, you’ll notice great example of life in the south. Everything from roadside vegetable carts to giant American flag eagles to peach water towers, as seen in this gallery.

I finally made it to Tallahassee around 2:30pm on Saturday, just in time to meet my dad for his church’s annual “Manly Man” lunch. There were venison burgers, barbecue, hushpuppies, fried fish, pork… so much good meat. And looking back, I’m so thankful I’m not a vegan. I even had the chance to take part in archery because when you think about it, what’s more manly than shooting something with a bow and arrow, am I right Maid Marian? Robin Hood has nothing on me! And if the 3 people who actually saw me shoot wildly out of control would feel free to not chime in on this, my off-off-off-so-far-off-Broadway-it’s-in-Nashville role as Legolas in the stage adaptation of Lord of the Round Shiny Things (what? New Line Cinema can be very litigious with “Lord of the Rings”) should stay in tact.

The afternoon continued with an inspirational talk from a guy who can boast a National Championship ring and a Super Bowl ring… Peter Boulware.
Peter BoulwareLater that night, we talked about plans for the next day. Yes, the day I was sure Jimmie Johnson would repeat as the winner of the Daytona 500! Here’s part 2 >>>

Festive Dog Sweaters

Remember the days when your parents used to dress you? OK, I don’t either but as the parent of 2 dogs, I’ve taken it upon myself to  put clothes on them whether they like it or not. “I’m your father,” I say when they give me those sad puppy eyes, literally. “You will put this Christmas sweater on. Oh, and smile when your grandparents get here! They drove a long way to see you guys.”

Thanks to my buddy at work who doesn’t have a dog (yet!) for this beautiful sweater that I’m sure my dogs will never chew up or avoid. I mean, take a look, they’re nothing if not thrilled to be wearing such a warm and festive sweater!

It’s Him or Me

How often are you faced with a choice that alters your future, and maybe the course of other lives, as well? Sure we all make choices every day, even tiny ones that seem insignificant but could determine where we are in a year, or 5 years, or 25. Like when I get caught at a red light, or just miss the elevator, or win tickets to a concert, how do those events alter the course of my life? Or do they at all? Maybe, maybe not. It’s the butterfly effect. There’s a song by Norah Jones called “Man of the Hour” that begins with a pretty big decision, “It’s him or me…” so she’s deciding between “a vegan and a pothead.” But I’m a firm believer there’s always a secret third option, which Norah takes and it’s a dog! Of course it’s a dog. Like Carrie Underwood sings, “The more boys I meet, the more I love my dog.”

Norah’s decision affected the lives of 2 guys, herself, and the dog, so I’d say it was a pretty important choice. Then she decided to sing about it, which I’m very happy about. It’s a lighthearted affirmation that dogs are always a good choice.

Thank you, India… and Other Favorite Names

I bet you didn’t think this post would be about Alanis Morissette, did you? Well, you’re in the ball park of being right. I heard her on the radio and totally forgot about the song “Thank U.” She wrote it after a memorable trip to India, so that’s why the chorus repeats “Thank you, India.” As for why she’s naked in the music video, I have no idea. I’m sure it’s something about being vulnerable or government oppression. Hearing the song reminded me how much I like her voice, and I’m not the only one. Just 2 days ago Prakriti Mudra made the Youtube comment, “She’s one of the most amazing singers I have come across.” Thank you, Prakriti. You might have the newest entry on the list of names I really like… which is as follows:

Alanis
Nicollete
Holden (Yes, it’s the name of every mom’s favorite man from “Young and the Restless”)
Downs (as a middle name)
Kelty
Hali (pronounced ‘Holly’)
Everlyn (as heard in the movie Rabbit-Proof Fence)
Asia
Piper
Amy (an all-time favorite)
Jennifer (an all-time favorite)

Travelling Taylor Swiftly into the Night

The other day I was driving down the interstate and what did my eyes behold? Taylor Swift! OK, not exactly the Taylor Swift. But it was a semi-truck with her last name on the side. Seconds later it was cut off by a truck bearing “West” on the side and I heard it say, “Yo Swift truck, I’m really happy for you, I’m gonna let you keep driving, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!”
swiftEvery time I see these trailers, I think of Taylor Swift for obvious reasons. The first time our professional paths crossed was in 2006 at the music video shoot for Wayne Warner and “God Bless the Children.” My guess is this video would be shot a lot differently today than it was in 2006, because Taylor wasn’t a superstar back then.

Taylor’s days as an unknown audience member in a Wayne Watson music video are long gone.  Her stock has skyrocketed and working at CMT, her name is heard quite often around the offices. I wonder if her worldwide popularity even affects the tractor-trailer business? I can’t imagine having “Swift” on the side of your trailer is a bad thing.  Unless you’re Harry Styles.
