Thoughts on John Wick 3, Rattlesnakes, Purple Rain

With so many options for watching movies at home, it’s no surprise I’ve seen 3 this week. Honestly, though, I think I spend more time just trying to find a movie to watch. You know how that goes!

I don’t have Netflix anymore, so actually the only streaming movie service I subscribe to at the moment is Hulu (an incredible deal of around $11 bundled with Spotify).

Movies this week were as follows:

Rattlesnakes (Hulu)

John Wick 3 (Redbox)

Purple Rain (DVD from library)

How I felt after…

Rattlesnakes was interesting, tense, and had a good twist at the end. I actually think it would be worth another viewing to see if I could pick up on some of the clues that hint towards how the ending goes.

John Wick 3. I really wanted to like this movie. I mean, the guy goes on a rampage after someone kills his dog… that’s a motive I can get behind. But in this 3rd chapter, I just didn’t feel anything. It reminds me of why I stopped watching “Walker, Texas Ranger” way back in the day. Stay with me here for a sec, even with the old reference! Chuck Norris as Walker always kicked butt. He never lost a fight. I knew by the end of the episodes he would come out on top. So no matter what situation he was in, it became predictable, eliminating any suspense. John Wick wasn’t going to die. It’s like he was immune to everything that would kill any normal person. Maybe that’s the draw, actually. And I’ll say this… the stunts, fights, and dog training, all of that was amazing. Like, beyond amazing. It’s worth watching for that alone, but as far as invoking any feelings, I give it a 3 out of 10.

The one that’s stuck with me the most is Purple Rain and I can’t exactly pinpoint why. It’s an 80s movie, so parts of it were a little cheesy but that goes with the territory. I had this same feeling when I watched Whitney in theaters, after watching the final episode of Wonder Years, and a few other shows/movies. Days later, still affected somehow. Like I said, I can’t quite explain what it is. My favorite scene, the one that I’ll remember the most from this movie… towards the end during the performance of “Purple Rain,” Prince walks over to a band member, one of two women who wrote the song (Prince wrote it in real life, but in the movie, this woman character wrote it), he leans over and kisses her on the cheek. This gesture signals that he’s finally put aside his pride to admit this woman and the other woman are talented songwriters, and he needs them in the band. It just seemed so real and unscripted. Put a smile on my face and was a great way to wrap up the film.

Have you seen any of these 3 movies? If so, what do you think? Share in the comments below!

more on Dan + Shay’s “10,000” hours video

First of all, it’s a very calculated and strategic move to have Justin Bieber as the still frame representing this video (see above), although the song is credited to Dan + Shay, the first release off their upcoming album. Having JB draw in viewers might help some of his fans cross over to the D+S camp, as seen below in the stats, there is a lot of room for D+S to grow their fanbase.

Instagram followers

Justin Bieber – 119,000,000

Dan+Shay – 1,000,000

Twitter followers

Justin Bieber – 106,000,000

Dan+Shay – 528,000

Interesting take-aways from the video

  • The duo’s biggest hit to date, Tequila, boasts over 73 million views on YouTube, posted well over a year ago. This video is nearly halfway to that mark and it was posted just over a week ago. The Justin Bieber nudge.

  • 10,000 hours is equal to about 416 days. That’s 1 year and 51 days. It’s 600,000 minutes. It’s also 36 million seconds… about how long it feels if you’re ever stuck in Nashville traffic.

  • All 3 men in this video are married, spoused listed below:

Dan Smyers spouse: Abby

Shay Mooney spouse: Hannah

Justin Bieber spouse: Hailey

  • Dan Smyers and Abby can be seen riding a Lime scooter. To ride such things, it’ll cost you $1 plus around $0.30 per minute, give or take. They can get up to speeds of 15mph. Check more Lime info here.

  • There are approximately 292 words in this song. The song is 2 min and 56 sec long. That’s  roughly 100 words per minute. Or in terms of the song title, that’s 1 word every 34 minutes for 10,000 hours.

  • If Matt Redman’s song, “10,000 Reasons” were mashed up with this Dan + Shay song, it would be called, A Thousand Reasons Per Hour, performed by 80s rock band 10,000 Maniacs.
