Ranked top 10 DC Talk songs of all time: 10 – 6

Let me just start by saying how difficult it was to narrow down this list. Just between you and me, I rather rank almost anything else. Favorite presidents? Sure. Best Disney movies? OK. What’s socially acceptable? Fine. But to rank these songs is like picking my favorite pet. Or my favorite episode of Friends. It’s nearly impossible. However, now I will say the words. I will say the words that consume me all day long. I won’t sugarcoat it at all, so help me God. Without further ado, let’s dive in with songs 10 through 6.

10. Time Is… (Free At Last)

I remember listening to this song as a young high schooler in Miami, Florida. Maybe it’s the heavy drum beat or the weighty guitar riffs reminiscent of 80s hair bands, but it became a favorite about as fast as it takes to perm a mullet.

Favorite lyric: “The signs of the times are dropping like flies. The cries of the people around us imply, they’re lookin’ for an answer that we already know. But time is definitely on the go.”

9. Colored People (Jesus Freak)

I was in 11th grade, and remember laying on my bed and listening to this entire album soon after it came out. We were living on Governors Island, adjacent to Manhattan, at the time. This song was one of my favorites off that album. Funny how the message is still so very, very relevant almost 20 years later.

Favorite lyric: “Ignorance has wronged some races, and vengeance is the Lord’s. If we aspire to share this space, repentance is the cure.”

8. My Will (Exodus – compilation album)

I first heard this song when my sister lent me her CD as I was leaving the Davis family beach cottage at St. Teresa one afternoon. I listened to the whole album all the way to Tallahassee. Every song is good, but this one is why I remember that day so well.

Favorite lyric: “Complexity haunts me for I am two men, entrenched in a battle that I’ll never win.”

7. Supernatural (Supernatural)
My college friend Brandon managed to get an early copy of this CD. I remember him, myself, Scott, and another friend or two listening to it in a men’s bathroom in Panama City Beach, Florida. That’s not weird at all. Maybe we needed a urinal because we were excited enough to pee our pants? You don’t know! But hey, go find a public bathroom and check it out for yourself, this is a great song from a great album.

Favorite lyric: I need an intervention, A touch of providence. It goes beyond religion, to my very circumstance.”

6. Lean On Me (Free At Last)

DC Talk’s take on one of my all-time favorite songs doesn’t disappoint. They add a southern gospel sound while infusing their rap/rock style to make it a win/win kind of situation in my book.

Favorite lyric: “Brother to brother we need to learn to love each other, so lean on me when you’re in trouble. I cast my cares on Christ ’cause He cares for me, so when you need a shoulder to cry on, just lean.”

Chris Janson’s tattoos

Chris Janson has made his mark on country music with hits like “Buy Me A Boat” and “Fix A Drink,” but the singer/songwriter also has a bit of country marked on him. The Missouri-native has a tattoo of the 24th state admitted to the union, Missouri, tattooed on the inside of his left arm. Georgia, as corrected in the comments below. Take a look.

Here are a few of his other tattoos. Photo credits are in the captions. Also check out Nathaniel Rateliff’s tattoos here.

The tattoo on the inside of his right arm says, “He who has the Son has life.” Confirmed in his interview here.

And finally, here are screen shots from his music videos, all via his YouTube channel.

Game Night: Redux

chris ledouxNo, Redux isn’t the name of a game, a Subaru, or a country singer, I just figured since this is my second post about a game night, I’d label it as a part 2…like Scream 2, or Home Alone 2, or Hot Shots! Part Deux.*

My friend B hosted his monthly game night and it was a real scream! I have a feeling lots of inside jokes are going to spring up out of this one. Even when I’m home alone I’ll chuckle about things that happened or things that were said there. Aside from the games, B has four rabbits and makes a killer quesadilla (he’s a real hot shot!), so they (the rabbits) were entertaining and tasty (not the rabbits!!!). We started off with a game called Pit, then switched over to Werewolf, which is a lot like Mafia, if that rings any bells for you. Our next game was Heads-Up, the Ellen game where you have to guess what’s on your phone as everyone else describes it to you.

We finished the gaming with one called Nouns. Really fun as each person comes up with 16 nouns and puts them all in a hat. Then you form teams and draw the slips of paper out one by one in a matter of three rounds, trying to get your teammates to guess the correct noun…

round 1: describe the noun as best you can

round 2: describe the noun with only 1 word

round 3: act out the noun without any words

This one is great because it’s free, you can be creative/silly/saucy with the nouns you come up with, and it can get challenging.

After the games, B sat down at his keyboard and began playing his medley of Disney tunes. It was so good! For a few seconds I got lost in the magic 🙂 I guess we were all still feeling a bit competitive, though, so we tried to guess the song titles and what movie each one was from.  B then tried out another medley he’s working on, a mashup of Bruno Mars songs. I guessed, maybe 3 out of the 9 or 10 songs he played. Clearly, I need to brush up on my Bruno Mars catalog.

I’ve always liked game nights, and last night is a good reason why.

The stars of Lukas Nelson’s “Find Yourself” music video

I heard a song the other day on Nashville’s Lightning 100 and, thanks to Shazam, found out it was Lukas Nelson “Find Yourself.” Love the song, love his voice, and now, I love the music video, too… check it out:

Through a bit of research and a kind director willing to share more about the video, I can tell you that it was shot on Leo Carrillo Beach in Los Angeles. Just off the Pacific Coast Highway, the beach is part of Leo Carrillo State Park, where you can surf, swim, hike, explore caves, and…. shoot music videos. Plus it’ll only set you back two Grande Pumpkin Spice Lattes to park there all afternoon. Nice!

Evidently the sandy coastline is a great location for movies, too. Just check out it’s wikipedia page. Here’s the trailer for Live A Little, Love A Little, an Elvis movie with scenes on Leo Carrillo Beach.

Side note: Did Elvis know dogs can’t be on this beach without a leash? Oh, Elvis! Or maybe back in the 60s that wasn’t a rule? Or perhaps they decided since Elvis was one of the most famous people of all time, his dog can run on the beach without a leash, but just this once! Either way, I hope they… ya know…

All of that to say, while Lukas Nelson is the obvious star of his “Find Yourself” music video, it’s easy to see that the beach itself is quite famous in it’s own right. There’s another star of the video, too, though. Recognize this woman in the colorful sweater?

She’s an actress from Los Angeles named Juliette LaBelle. Her cool, laid back vibe, along with the same attitude from the rest of the folks in the video, plus the shot of the kids hitting the tambourines (I love that this shot was used in the video, it’s very endearing), all work together to make up a great video.

In fact, the video makes the song even better, which is a tricky accomplishment for any music video director. We’ve all seen good songs with bad videos, right? It’s so common, VH1 even put out a list. So major kudos to director Gus Black for making sure this one will never be on any such list.

Gus Black is also an accomplished musician and a professional photographer. For more on his varied work, click here.

The phone number in Luke Combs “When It Rains It Pours” video

You may not have noticed, but at the 2:53 mark in the video above a “waitress” (if that’s her real job, I’ll get to that shortly) is carrying a notepad with a phone number on it.

Screen Shot 2017-10-11 at 3.13.32 PM

Assuming it’s a Charleston area code, where the video what shot, the number would be…

843-555-3825

A search for this number returns nothing significant. But since she didn’t include the area code on her slip of paper, I also looked up:

800-555-3825

I can confirm without a doubt this number is, how shall I say this, an adult chat line. I hope I wasn’t charged because who has two thumbs and dialed the number? This guy! So was the woman in the restaurant where he ordered chicken wings, extra ranch, Miller Light actually a waitress? Perhaps. Or maybe this was her way of making more money after she clocks out of her “day job,” hmm?
